Not everyone experiences nausea and vomiting during chemotherapy. Find out if you’re at risk of these side effects and what you and your doctor can do to prevent them.

Nausea and vomiting are common side effects of chemotherapy treatment for cancer. But in most cases, these side effects can be controlled with preventive medications and other measures.

Who’s at risk of chemotherapy nausea and vomiting?

Whether you’ll experience nausea and vomiting as a result of chemotherapy depends on:

  • What chemotherapy drugs you receive and their dosage
  • Whether you receive other cancer treatments — such as radiation — during your chemotherapy treatment
  • Whether you’ve experienced nausea and vomiting in the past

Chemotherapy drugs are classified into four different categories based on the likelihood they will cause nausea and vomiting: high, moderate, low or minimal. If you get one of the drugs that is known to cause nausea and vomiting, your doctor will probably give you preventive medicine.

Whether a drug will cause nausea and vomiting also depends on the amount you receive. Some drugs may be less likely to cause side effects at lower doses. Ask your doctor whether your treatment plan is likely to cause nausea and vomiting.

Personal factors that may increase your risk

Not everyone reacts to chemotherapy in the same way. Certain factors may make you more vulnerable to treatment-related nausea and vomiting.

You may be more vulnerable if one or more of the following apply to you:

  • You’re a woman.
  • You’re younger than 50.
  • You’ve experienced nausea and vomiting with previous treatments, or you have a history of motion sickness.
  • You have a high level of anxiety.
  • You experienced morning sickness during pregnancy.
  • You are prone to vomiting when you’re sick.
  • You have a history of drinking little or no alcohol.

Also, if you expect that your treatment will cause nausea and vomiting, there’s a chance that it will. This might happen if you think that all cancer treatments cause these side effects, which isn’t true. Your doctor can tell you whether the treatment you’ll receive is likely to cause nausea and vomiting.

Overview

Melatonin is a hormone in your body that plays a role in sleep. The production and release of melatonin in the brain is connected to time of day, increasing when it’s dark and decreasing when it’s light. Melatonin production declines with age.

Melatonin is also available as a supplement, typically as an oral tablet. Most melatonin supplements are made in a lab.

People commonly use melatonin for sleep disorders, such as insomnia and jet lag. Unlike with many sleep medications, you are unlikely to become dependent on melatonin, have a diminished response after repeated use (habituation) or experience a hangover effect.

Evidence

Research on melatonin use for specific conditions shows:

  • Circadian rhythm sleep disorders in the blind. Melatonin can help improve these disorders in adults and children.
  • Delayed sleep phase (delayed sleep-wake phase sleep disorder). In this disorder your sleep pattern is delayed two hours or more from a conventional sleep pattern, causing you to go to sleep later and wake up later. Research shows that melatonin reduces the length of time needed to fall asleep and advances the start of sleep in young adults and children with this condition. Talk to your child’s doctor before giving melatonin to a child.
  • Insomnia. Research suggests that melatonin might provide relief from the inability to fall asleep and stay asleep (insomnia) by slightly improving your total sleep time, sleep quality and how long it takes you to fall asleep.
  • Jet lag. Evidence shows that melatonin can modestly improve jet lag symptoms, such as alertness.
  • Shift work disorder. Some research suggests that melatonin might improve daytime sleep quality and duration in people whose jobs require them to work outside the traditional morning to evening schedule.
  • Sleep-wake cycle disturbances. Melatonin can help treat these disturbances in children with a number of disabilities.

Recent research is also exploring whether melatonin might improve cognitive impairment in people with Alzheimer’s disease and prevent cell damage associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Generally safe

Your body likely produces enough melatonin for its general needs. However, evidence suggests that melatonin promotes sleep and is safe for short-term use. Melatonin can be used to treat delayed sleep phase and circadian rhythm sleep disorders in the blind and provide some insomnia relief. Treat melatonin as you would any sleeping pill and use it under your doctor’s supervision.

If you and your partner are planning a pregnancy, you might be wondering about the health of your sperm. Understand the factors that can affect male fertility — then consider steps to help your sperm achieve your goal.

What determines sperm health?

Sperm health depends on various factors, including quantity, movement and structure:

  • Quantity. You’re most likely to be fertile if your ejaculate — the semen discharged in a single ejaculation — contains at least 15 million sperm per milliliter. Too little sperm in an ejaculation might make it more difficult to get pregnant because there are fewer candidates available to fertilize the egg.
  • Movement. To reach and fertilize an egg, sperm must move — wriggling and swimming through a woman’s cervix, uterus and fallopian tubes. This is known as motility. You’re most likely to be fertile if at least 40 percent of your sperm are moving.
  • Structure (morphology). Normal sperm have oval heads and long tails, which work together to propel them. While not as important a factor as sperm quantity or movement, the more sperm you have with a normal shape and structure, the more likely you are to be fertile.

What causes male fertility problems?

Various medical issues can contribute to male fertility problems, including:

  • A problem in the hypothalamus or the pituitary gland — parts of the brain that signal the testicles to produce testosterone and sperm (secondary hypogonadism)
  • Testicular disease
  • Sperm transport disorders

Age can also play a role. The ability of sperm to move and the proportion of normal sperm tend to decrease with age, affecting fertility, especially after age 50.

Once found only in health food stores, organic food is now a regular feature at most supermarkets. And that’s created a bit of a dilemma in the produce aisle.

On one hand, you have a conventionally grown apple. On the other, you have one that’s organic. Both apples are firm, shiny and red. Both provide vitamins and fiber, and both are free of fat, sodium and cholesterol. Which should you choose? Get the facts before you shop.

What is organic farming?

The word “organic” refers to the way farmers grow and process agricultural products, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products and meat. Organic farming practices are designed to meet the following goals:

  • Enhance soil and water quality
  • Reduce pollution
  • Provide safe, healthy livestock habitats
  • Enable natural livestock behavior
  • Promote a self-sustaining cycle of resources on a farm

Materials or practices not permitted in organic farming include:

  • Synthetic fertilizers to add nutrients to the soil
  • Sewage sludge as fertilizer
  • Most synthetic pesticides for pest control
  • Irradiation to preserve food or to eliminate disease or pests
  • Genetic engineering, used to improve disease or pest resistance or to improve crop yields
  • Antibiotics or growth hormones for livestock

Organic crop farming materials or practices may include:

  • Plant waste left on fields (green manure), livestock manure or compost to improve soil quality
  • Plant rotation to preserve soil quality and to interrupt cycles of pests or disease
  • Cover crops that prevent erosion when parcels of land are not in use and to plow into soil for improving soil quality
  • Mulch to control weeds
  • Predatory insects or insect traps to control pests
  • Certain natural pesticides and a few synthetic pesticides approved for organic farming, used rarely and only as a last resort in coordination with a USDA organic certifying agent

Organic farming practices for livestock include:

  • Healthy living conditions and access to the outdoors
  • Pasture feeding for at least 30 percent of livestock’s nutritional needs during grazing season
  • Organic foods for animals
  • Vaccinations

Organic or not? Check the label

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has established an organic certification program that requires all organic foods to meet strict government standards. These standards regulate how such foods are grown, handled and processed.

Any product labeled as organic on the product description or packaging must be USDA certified. If it is certified, the producer may also use an official USDA Organic seal.

The USDA makes an exception for producers who sell less than $5,000 a year in organic foods. These producers must follow the guidelines for organic food production, but they do not need to go through the certification process. They can label their products as organic, but they may not use the official USDA Organic seal.

Products certified 95 percent or more organic may display this USDA seal.

The USDA also has guidelines on how organic foods are described on product labels:

  • 100 percent organic. This description is used on certified organic fruits, vegetables, eggs, meat or other single-ingredient foods. It may also be used on multi-ingredient foods if all of the ingredients are certified organic, excluding salt and water. These may have a USDA seal.
  • Organic. If a multi-ingredient food is labeled organic, at least 95 percent of the ingredients are certified organic, excluding salt and water. The nonorganic items must be from a USDA list of approved additional ingredients. These also may have a USDA seal.
  • Made with organic. If a multi-ingredient product has at least 70 percent certified organic ingredients, it may have a “made with organic” ingredients label. For example, a breakfast cereal might be labeled “made with organic oats.” The ingredient list must identify what ingredients are organic. These products may not carry a USDA seal.
  • Organic ingredients. If less than 70 percent of a multi-ingredient product is certified organic, it may not be labeled as organic or carry a USDA seal. The ingredient list can indicate which ingredients are organic.

Do ‘organic’ and ‘natural’ mean the same thing?

No, “natural” and “organic” are not interchangeable terms. In general, “natural” on a food label means that it has no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. It does not refer to the methods or materials used to produce the food ingredients.

Other common food labels should also not be confused with organic labels. For example, the guidelines for certified organic beef include — among a number of requirements — access to pasture during a minimum 120-day grazing season and no growth hormones. But the labels “free-range” or “hormone-free,” while they must be used truthfully, do not indicate a farmer followed all guidelines for organic certification.

Nutrition pros have developed many techniques and tricks that can help you modify recipes for healthier eating — and evidence-based research tells us they taste great, too.

These five tips will help you get started.

1. Start fresh, stay positive

Nutrition experts often recommend starting with some new-to-you recipes to launch your healthier eating journey. But you’ll soon be savvy enough to transform favorite recipes into healthier versions, too.

Remember: “Healthier” doesn’t mean “less tasty.” Keep your mind open to experiencing new flavors. Enjoy the process as you experiment with fresh ingredients and create dishes that don’t rely on fat and salt for taste.

2. Reduce fats, sugars and salt, increase herbs and spices

Most of us consume too much saturated fat. But fat adds flavor, so scaling back fat alone is not the answer. Studies have found, though, if you scale back fat and pump up flavor by adding herbs and spices, you can get the great taste you crave.

For instance, instead of 80 percent lean meat, choose 95 percent lean meat. Then, use a heavier hand with the basil, oregano, garlic and other favorite flavors for a really satisfying result.

Researchers have tried the approach with dessert, too. In one study, they cut the sugar content of apple crisp by more than a third, but added an extra jolt of Saigon cinnamon to compensate. It worked: Tasters liked that version just as much as the full-sugar original.

Build up your store of herbs and spices, set the salt aside and you’ve got a solid formula for healthier, tastier eating.

In fact, when working couples gave tours of their homes, women who used more words describing clutter and disorganization also tended to show levels of the stress hormone cortisol, suggesting chronic stress. On the flip side, those who described their homes as being restful or talked about their beautiful outdoor spaces were less stressed and reported less sad feelings as the day went on.

What you can do: Set aside 10 to 15 minutes at the end of each day to put stray items away.

Trevose, November 7 2017 – In advance of World Diabetes Day, on November 14, International SOS highlights the importance for travellers to manage their diabetes. Due to a range of factors inherent in travel, the ongoing medical management of mobile workers with chronic diseases such as diabetes may be disrupted. Failing to effectively manage chronic conditions can pose a greater risk to some traveling business executives than infectious diseases.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that diabetes affects 8.5% of people over the age of 18 worldwide [1].Today, approximately 415 million adults have diabetes, and by 2040 this number is expected to reach 642 million[2].

Dr Irene Lai, medical director at International SOS comments, “When considering medical risks abroad, travellers often focus on infectious diseases that are present in exotic locations. Whilst these are serious risks that need to be considered, a more common issue is the underlying chronic disease that travellers take with them, such as diabetes. Traveling across time zones, for instance, can complicate schedules for eating and taking medications. Foods are unfamiliar. Medications and supplies may be confiscated at borders. Losing or running out of medications while abroad may not be the simple problem it is when at home. Brand names are different; the medications may not have been stored properly, may have expired or may even be counterfeit [3].”

International SOS offers the following advice to individuals with diabetes when they travel:

  • Visit your healthcare professional well in advance of travel to discuss your itinerary and activities.
  • Ensure your diabetes is stable and optimally controlled.
  • Have enough medication for the trip and a bit extra in case of delays. Medication should be in its original container, clearly labelled with the contents and your name
  • Request a letter describing your condition, medication and equipment required and a carry a copy of your prescriptions.
  • Maintain a healthy diet and active lifestyle even when away from home.

Dimension Data Unveils Mobile Application to Track Health and Wellness of Africa’s Pro Cycling Team

 

Cape Town / London – 17 November 2017Dimension Data, the global USD 8 billion ICT solutions and services provider, today unveiled its health and wellness mobile app at the annual training camp of Africa’s professional cycling team, Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka. Called Phila (pee-lah), which means ‘to live’ in Nguni, the app was custom designed to Team Dimension Data’s specific requirements.

The app tracks the daily physical and mental performance of the team’s 39 World Tour and Continental riders located in 10 countries. Data collected from the team includes geographical location and time zones, quality and quantity of sleep, response to training, muscle soreness, as well as mood, motivation, and stress levels.

Developed by Dimension Data’s Digital Practice in partnership with Team Dimension Data’s riders, and Australia-based MIK Health, Phila is also a communication and data-sharing management tool for the team.

Every day, Phila prompts the riders to complete an assessment via their mobile device. The information is correlated with existing training data captured by the team’s TrainingPeaks application, and is used to monitor training performance alongside overall health and wellness.

“It was crucial that we designed an app which was easy to use 365 days a year, and riders could upload their assessment responses in two to three minutes,” explains Dr Carol Austin, Head of Performance Sport and Medical for Team Dimension Data. “Our goal was to keep the questions to a minimum, but extract the maximum data to identify any factors that could jeopardise our rider’s ability to train – even weather conditions and equipment issues.”

In addition to the riders being geographically distributed, they’re often in different cycles of racing, training, and resting. It’s difficult for riders, coaches, doctors, and performance staff to stay in constant communication. Phila is a simple way to capture key information and share it with the team’s support staff, who can respond immediately to injuries or illness and adapt rider racing and training schedules.”

Location of each rider: Which country and continent the riders are in when racing or training.

Travel: The teams’ performance management need to understand the impact that travel has on the health and performance of riders, for example the impact that travel across time zones may have on the riders.

Sleep: Data such as whether the rider sleeps at home, in a hotel, or on an aircraft is collected; and where he slept the previous night; what time the rider fell asleep and woke up, how long the rider slept; the quality of sleep; and the altitude at which the rider slept and woke up, which is very important on a science level.

General wellbeing: Using scientifically validated scales that are simple to answer, riders are asked to rate their mood levels each day, their motivation and current stress levels, if they’re feeling fatigued, or have muscle soreness.

Training: Riders are asked to provide a subjective view on their performance in training – or racing the previous day: did they perform as expected? What’s really important about this data is how the rider feels about his training: what his rating was on perceived exertion? Is the rider responding well to the training that the coach prescribed? Did the effort feel like a 7/10, a 5/10, or a 9/10?

Management: Was the rider able to train that day, and if the answer is no, was it the weather? Was he ill or injured? Or is there something else happening such as a bike fail? Even a stuffy nose is acted on. While a blocked nose may not appear to be serious, in the past, riders have ignored the blocked nose and it turned into pneumonia.

Chris’ advice for anyone that is thinking about moving about more and planning their own challenge for Sport Relief is “it’s important to go slow; trying to run for miles if you haven’t done regular exercise in years is not setting yourself up for success. Don’t compare yourself to other people but do set yourself a reasonable goal that is reflective of your ability.”

Chris also explains his tips and advice for anyone planning on getting fitter and undertaking their own fundraising challenge for Sport Relief:

  • Aim for something attainable – don’t plan on running a marathon if you haven’t run in years!’
  • Set small goals along the way – recording key milestones will keep you motivated and help you keep track of your progress’
  • Have a long term aim in mind – think about what you’d ideally like to achieve and consider how you’re going to get there’
  • Try setting a goal with friends – having the support of others can be key to staying motivated and you’ll have lots of fun along the way!’
  • Make a plan – a schedule will keep you on track, otherwise you might find it hard to remember what you should be doing and what your next steps are. Keeping a record along the way will remind you of everything you’ve achieved’
  • Don’t obsess, enjoy the journey! – Ultimately, you should be having fun, getting fit shouldn’t be a chore and there are lots of ways to make exercise enjoyable’
