Cancer Treatment Stages And Types

Nothing is as scary as being diagnosed with cancer. This is one of the most ravaging diseases that affect your body cells. There are multiple types of cancer treatments. The type of treatment that’s administered depends on the type of cancer as well as the stage. This article provides an outline of different cancer treatment stages as well as treatment options.

What Is Cancer?

It’s a combination of hundreds of diseases that cause abnormal and uncontrolled growth of the body cells. Cancer usually forms a malignant type of tumor which can spread to other parts of the body. The disease may be caused by external factors such as chemical radiation, UV Rays, highly processed foods etc. as well as genetics.

Different Stage Of Cancer Treatment

The primary goal of cancer treatment is to kill the cancer cells and to promote healthy and normal growth of body cells. However, the cure for cancer may be effective or not. This is because sometimes cancer has spread to other parts of the body and has caused extensive damage, making treatment difficult. There are multiple stages of cancer treatment. The first stage is mainly about the killing or the removal of the cancerous cells. The second stage involves the removal of cells that may not have been destroyed in the first stage. The last stage is usually used alongside the 1st and the 2nd stage in order to reduce the side effects of treatment.

Primary Treatment

It’s the first and most important stage. The main goal of this stage of treatment is to remove the cancer cells from the body completely. Note that any type of cancer treatment may be used as a primary type of treatment. However, surgery is the most popular type of primary cancer treatment but radiation therapy and chemotherapy may be used.

Adjuvant Treatment

It’s the second stage that’s is used after primary treatment. The purpose of the adjuvant is to kill the cancer cells that could have remained after primary treatment. Adjuvant treatment reduces the likelihood of cancer reoccurring. Common types of adjuvant therapies include hormone therapy, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.

Palliative Treatment

They help to relieve the side effects of treatment options used to treat cancer or reduce the symptoms of cancer itself. It may be used with primary or adjuvant treatment option and it may include chemo, surgery, hormone therapy, or radiation.

Different Types Of Cancer Treatment

The cure for cancer usually involves the administration of one treatment or a combination of two or more. Chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation are the most common types of treatment that are used to treat cancer. So how do they work to prevent the spread of this disease?

It’s also simply known as chemo. This treatment option involves giving patients oral drugs or injections. More than one type of drug is normally administered via chemotherapy. It is used to treat malignant cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. The drugs are normally absorbed into the bloodstream. Note that chemo is normally given depending on the stage and type of cancer. It can be used to treat lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer etc. Chemo is always done in cycles. This is because its side effects are very strong and the patient needs a period of rest. The rest period allows the body to recover and promote the growth of normal cells.

It’s used to treat a localized type of cancer. Surgery can be used to treat breast cancer, skin cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer, and others. Surgery is used to remove the tumor and the surrounding tissues which may contain the harmful cancerous cells. Surgery is one of the best treatment options for cancer and its success rate is very high. Note that surgery can’t be used to treat leukemia and cancer that has spread extensively.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation Therapy is often can be used to treat breast cancer, prostate cancer, thyroid cancer, and cervix cancer among others. It’s normally used to contain cancers that are localized in one area. It destroys and damages the cells that cause cancer, limiting their growth and spread. It can be administered alone or along with other treatment alternatives such as chemotherapy and surgery. Radiation therapy is given by aiming rays with high energy on the affected area or putting implants near the cancer tumor.

Other Drugs

There are new drugs which are used for cancer treatment instead of chemotherapy. They include Biologic therapies i.e.  Immunotherapy which is used to enhance the functions of the immune system. It’s used to lessen the side effects of other cancer treatment options and stop or reduce the growth of cancerous cells. Targeted therapies are high-quality drugs that work on specific genes, altering the way the cancer cells grow. It repairs the damaged cells. All these drugs don’t have the same side effects like what chemo drugs produce. They may be used with chemotherapy as well as other treatment options.

Final Thoughts

The general goal of cancer treatment is to cure it. The treatment options are used to prevent the spread of this disease and kill the cells.  As much as cancer prevention is important, this disease may be caused by genetic factors. That’s why it’s important to continuously go for cancer screening and check-ups. Note that sometimes the type of treatment that’s administered can’t cure cancer but to slow its growth and limit it from spreading. This will allow you to live for as long as possible with minimal side effects.
